Log burner installation costs: what should the quote include?
The price of a wood burning stove is not the price of a finished installation. Two homes buying the same appliance can need quite different work. The useful starting point is an itemised quote based on a survey, with the stove price kept separate from the installation.
What drives the difference?
An existing chimney needs assessment; its presence alone does not establish that it is suitable. Ask the installer to explain the proposed flue arrangement and any remedial work. Roof access can also affect the job, so confirm whether access equipment or scaffolding is included.
Within the room, a new hearth, changes to the opening and finishing work can be substantial parts of the project. A quote for fitting the stove may stop before plastering, decoration or flooring repairs. Clarify where each contractor’s responsibility ends.
Ask for these items separately
- The exact stove model and any required accessories.
- Survey, chimney assessment and preparatory work.
- The specified liner or flue system and associated components.
- Access equipment, roof work and weatherproofing where applicable.
- Hearth, opening alterations and any structural work.
- Labour, waste removal, finishing and decoration.
- Commissioning, handover, required alarms and compliance documentation.
- Delivery, VAT, exclusions and any provisional allowances.
This breakdown makes comparison fairer. A cheaper quote may cover less, while a higher figure may include work another installer has excluded. Ask what could change after work starts and how additional costs would be agreed.
Confirm the paperwork
For work within the relevant scheme in England and Wales, a HETAS registered installer can provide a Certificate of Compliance. Confirm the appropriate approval and notification route for your property and location before work begins. HETAS: before you purchase.
Keep the handover documents, appliance manual and installation details together. Ask for the maintenance requirements and how future sweeping and servicing will be accessed.
When should you order the stove?
Have the intended model, heat output and installation requirements checked before committing. A discounted appliance is poor value if it does not suit the room or adds unexpected fitting work.
Older online quotations can explain what surprised another homeowner, but they cannot establish the current price for your property. Use written, dated quotes for the same scope of work.
Next step: shortlist wood burning stoves, then confirm suitability and the complete installation budget before purchase.
