Bioethanol fireplaces: heat, smell and everyday use

A bioethanol fireplace provides a real flame, which is a large part of its appeal. It also brings fuel handling and room requirements that deserve attention before you buy. Choose it with a clear view of everyday use, rather than expecting the convenience of an electric flame effect.

Does a bioethanol fire give off heat?

Yes. Burning fuel produces heat, so check the manufacturer’s stated output for the exact burner. Consider whether you want that warmth whenever the flame is lit. Unlike an electric effect with independent heating, a real bioethanol flame cannot be enjoyed with its heat switched off.

Ask whether the appliance is intended for decorative or supplementary use and whether it suits your room. Do not assume it can replace your main heating system.

Calculate fuel costs before comparing prices

Multiply the documented consumption in litres per hour by the price per litre of the approved fuel. For example, an assumed consumption of 0.4 litres an hour and an assumed fuel price of £4 per litre gives £1.60 an hour. These are illustrative inputs, not a product specification or current fuel quotation.

Use the consumption range for the setting you expect to select. Include fuel delivery charges when comparing suppliers. A large container may reduce the price per litre, but storage needs to remain suitable and safe.

What about smell and ventilation?

Do not buy on a blanket promise that every bioethanol fire is odourless. Ask to experience the exact model through lighting, normal burning and extinguishing, using its specified fuel. If you are sensitive to smells, that demonstration is particularly useful.

Bioethanol combustion is not emission-free. Room suitability and ventilation must follow the exact model’s instructions; no chimney does not mean no ventilation requirement. EcoSmart’s safety guidance requires adequate ventilation and appropriate fuel. EcoSmart Fire: ethanol burner safety.

Allow for the refuelling routine

Never add fuel to a burning fire or refill a container that is still hot. Follow the manufacturer’s cooling period and filling procedure. London Fire Brigade also advises safe fuel storage and following the appliance instructions. London Fire Brigade: fires and biofuel heaters.

Before ordering, check access to the burner, the filling equipment required and how remaining fuel is managed. Do not assume a loose burner can safely convert an existing fireplace without assessment.

Next step: compare bioethanol fires by room requirements, fuel consumption, heat output and refuelling access, as well as appearance.
